The tiered cupcake stand is the standard style that is used for almost any event that has cupcakes. There are a few other styles of cupcake stands, but they usually aren’t as stylish and effective. As for the styles of tiered cupcake stands, there are quite a few and I want to examine the pros and cons of each in this post so that you can make a good decision on which you need for your event!

Flat Tier Cupcake Stands

These are the most universal and versatile style of stands out there. They come in 3, 4, 5, and 6 tiers, and have a flat surface on each tier. If you plan on getting multiple uses out your stand, this is the way to go. Since the tiers are flat, they are flexible in the number of cupcakes they can hold. You can load them full, or with less and fill the empty space with decorations.

Many large tiered cupcake stands can hold upwards of 150 cupcakes, and there are smaller ones that will hold two dozen or less. If you are looking for a size that you can get a ton of use out of, a mid-sized 3 tier cupcake stand is perfect for that. A stand that will hold 36 to 48 cupcakes and has flat tiers will get the most use.

Wire Cupcake Stands

Wire cupcake stands look really cool and have “pseudo tiers” that make it look more like a tree than a stand. Whatever you call them, they fall into the tiered category! While these look really cool, they are designed to hold a specific number of cupcakes. In the case that you need more or less cupcakes than the stand holds, you’ll need to get something else (or just host parties that are always the exact same size!).

Even if you might only get one or two uses out of the stand, wire ones are still really cool to use. I love the way that they look, and so do many other people. They work great for kid’s birthday parties since those tend to have a smaller number of attendees. If you need something that is easy, good looking, and doesn’t need any other decoration the wire stand is a great choice.

Styrofoam Cupcake Stands

If you’ve read our other post on the Sweet Server Cupcake Stand, you probably know that we’re not a huge fan of styrofoam. That doesn’t mean that they might not work out well for you. The biggest problem that you’ll run into with this style of tiered cupcake stand is that they break very easily.

On the good side, they are very affordable and can be recycled in some areas as soon as you’re finished. Just be sure to also check out cardboard cupcake stands as a “greener” alternative to styrofoam.

As you can see, tiered cupcake stands are everywhere and are the standard style. There are a ton of choices out there, so figure out how big yours needs to be first, then start narrowing down the field until you find the one that suits all of your needs!

Wedding cupcake stands are just like every other stand out there, but most people will decorate them in a way that they jive perfectly with the rest of the party. Decorating them can be as simple or elaborate as you like, and in this post I want to share some tips on decorating a wedding cupcake stand so you can have exactly what you want on your special day. I also want to cover some reasons for not decorating them at all, and what type of cupcake stand this works best with.

Decorating Wedding Cupcake Stands

Like the rest of your wedding, there isn’t a specific way that this has to be done, so instead I will show you some things that are commonly done and you can customize them to your tastes from there.

Flowers are a simple and elegant way to dress up your stand. When this technique is used, the cupcake stand is usually larger than what’s needed to accommodate the cupcakes and the empty space is filled with flowers. The flowers that are used are normally the same that are in the table centerpieces so everything matches.

On cupcake stands with flat tiers, you may be able to drape fabric over the tiers in colors that match the rest of the event. This is extremely simple, yet very effective. Ribbon may also be wrapped around the lip of the tiers to add a splash of color on a plain, white cupcake stand.

The Case For Not Decorating

Now I’m not the best cupcake decorator, but I do know that if I were to create some very exquisite cupcakes, I would be upset if they were fighting for the spotlight with decorations on the stand! If you’re getting professionally baked cupcakes that are decorated just for you, it might be best to let them shine on the stand, rather than the stand itself.

Another situation where I wouldn’t decorate the stand is if cupcakes are decorated in the colors of the wedding. Wedding colors on a white cupcake stand looks very classy, and in most cases is enough to stand on its own.

Decorating wedding cupcake stands is very easy to do, should you choose to do it. If you’re on the fence on whether to decorate or not, bake a couple of cupcakes and test them out with some decorations to see how it looks. It’s much easier to make a decision like this when you can get a clear idea of what it’s going to look like, rather than relying on your imagination!

What Not To Get

This is probably easier to figure out than what you should use! The things to avoid are wire stands that only hold a fixed amount of cupcakes, styrofoam stands since you need something nicer than that for your wedding, and stands that are already decorated so you can add the necessary flair to match your theme.

The trend of having cupcakes instead of a cake isn’t going anywhere, so cupcake stands for weddings are key to pulling this off right. There are a lot of different styles of cupcake stands to choose from, so you’ll have tons of options. In this post I want to look at a few different styles of stands, and how they work for weddings so you can pick the perfect one for your big day.

Before you can start shopping for a wedding cupcake stand, you have to figure out how big it needs to be. I know that this sounds pretty obvious, but having an exact number dialed in beforehand will prevent unwanted surprises later on! Usually, I’ll tell people to take the total number of people who RSVP’d and add 15% to that total. There are going to be some people who eat extra, some will hit the floor, and you’ll probably want to take one or two home with you. The 15% should cover all of that!

Tiered Cupcake Stands

Tiered stands are the most common style used for weddings. They allow you to fit a lot of cupcakes in a fairly small space, and they look fantastic. Like I said above, the flat tiered cupcake stands are perfect for decorating. You can do anything you want with them, or leave it plain if you like! One of the most popular ways to decorate them is to take the same flowers that you are using in your table center pieces and work them in around the cupcakes. Fabric in the colors of the rest of the wedding can also be draped onto the stand. Both of these techniques will really bring everything together and look fantastic!

Now talk about fun! The Kidkraft Cupcake Stand is the perfect partner to tea time any day!

I know that this isn’t the standard cupcake stand that we cover here on this site, but it’s just too much fun to pass on.

If I were to review this like a regular stand, I would comment on the versatility that having flat tiers provides, and how pink is a great base color for a cupcake stand. So many other stands are a plain white, which is great if you want to decorate it, but doesn’t look that good on its own.

Since this is purely for fun we’ll comment on how awesome it is that the cupcake stand set comes with 8 wood cupcakes that can taken apart and reassembled in any fashion the little minds want to. The entire stand is crafted from wood and painted, so you don’t have to worry about the nasty chemicals that accompany plastic toys.

The cupcakes themselves are perfectly sized for little hands, so it will work out perfect in the play kitchen.

Assembly is very simple, and only takes a couple of minutes. It comes with instructions that you probably won’t need, but they’re there just in case.

In this post I want to share with you some of the other baking tools that are a part of my arsenal. Not all of these are designed for cupcakes, but I love using them because they make my life much easier.

The Kitchenaid Mixer

The Kitchenaid Mixer is a must in any kitchen, whether you bake or not. If you don’t already have one of these, give your forearms and hand mixer a rest, and step up to the real deal. Your cupcakes will turn out better because you don’t have to worry about mixing inconsistencies. There are also enough different attachments available for this stand mixer that will keep you busy in the kitchen for years to come!

This is the model that I have (in orange of course!) and it works perfectly for baking a lot of cupcakes, and comes with the right blades for cupcake batter. Click on the pic for more info!

Small Wares

2 Oz. Ladle

When loading up the cupcake liners, some people like to use an ice cream scoop. That works fine, but I have a hard time keeping the pan clean when the blade on the scoop moves. It tends to fling batter all over the place! Instead, I use a simple 2 oz ladle that fills the liner perfectly every time, without making a mess.

This size ladle will also get a ton of other use in the kitchen, so having one on hand is a great idea. You’ll use it for soup, pasta, and sauces.

Also, with this style of ladle you get to feel like a restaurant chef every time you pull it out because it’s the same type that they use!

Wilton Decorating Kit

This decorating kit by Wilton is really designed for cakes, but it has every decorating tool you’ll need for your cupcakes. It has a ton of different tips, couplers, bags, and even smoothing spatulas.

The price might turn a few people away, but if you enjoy baking and don’t already have all of the decorating tools this is the perfect kit. You’ll be able to tackle any project without having to stop and go to the kitchen supply store to get a tip that you need to finish.

Also, when all of these parts are purchased separately it will cost a lot more than it does in the kit. So if you’re serious about becoming great at decorating cupcakes, this decorating kit is perfect for you!

Along with a few cupcake stands these are my current tools that I use. Baking cupcakes if fun and easy, and becomes funner and easier with these simple tools!

Cupcake Pans

If you’ve ever baked before you probably already have a cupcake pan, but if you need to turn out more than three dozen to fill your cupcake stand it is extremely handy to have a second pan. Having a second cupcake pan allows you to either bake twice as much at a time, or be preparing the next batch while the first one is in the oven. I like to do the latter of those two options because my oven heats at very different rates on the top and bottom racks.

Also, it’s important to check the pan that you already have. Most of them have some sort of nonstick coating on them so they can release muffins easily, but once the nonstick is scratched it can become toxic. If you have nonstick stuff that’s been scratched, it’s a good idea to swap it out. To prevent that from happening, never use metal utensils against nonstick!

Cupcake Liners

Cupcake liners are an obvious necessity for baking them, but choosing the right one isn’t so obvious. I recommend that you go recycle the boring white ones that are sitting in your cabinet right now, and jump into something new and fun! If your cupcake stand is decorated, I recommend choosing liners that match the stand. Should the stand not be decorated, choose liners that jive with the rest of the party.

A cupcake carrier is one of the most necessary tools when baking a lot of cupcakes at once. For the longest time, I never knew that these existed, and ended up using shallow cardboard boxes to transport cupcakes. I only discovered these last year, and now have no clue how I ever lived without them! If you are setting up your cupcake stand somewhere other than where you baked them, you must have a cupcake carrier!

Sweet Server Cupcake Stands – Reviewed

Today I want to take a look at Sweet Server Cupcake Stands. These are styrofoam cupcake stands that carry a very low price, when compared to other materials. I’ve used these before, and have had a very mixed experience with them. For the price it’s easy to justify getting what you pay for, but there are some other stands that cost a little bit more and will get a lot more use out of them! In this post I want try and give an unbiased review so you can make the decision for yourself. It will be hard to stay unbiased since I’ve actually used these, buy I’ll try to keep it fair!

What’s Good With The Sweet Server Cupcake Stand?

The best thing about the Sweet Server Cupcake Stand is its low price. You can usually pick one of these up for between $10 and $15. There are a couple of retailers that sell them in packs of three, which would be a good choice for larger events. Every time I’ve seen the packs of them, they usually aren’t marked down as a bulk price, so be sure to add it up and see if it’s cheaper to get them individually before making a purchase.

Since these cupcake stands are made from styrofoam they are incredibly lightweight. If you’re stuck moving a lot of stuff for your event, this can be extremely helpful. The problem is that once they aren’t full of cupcakes, they are prone to blowing over in the wind. I don’t recommend this cupcakes stand for outdoor use!

The size of the Sweet Server stand is good as well. It holds around 36 cupcakes, which works great for many events. I like the fact that it doesn’t have an odd size (who bakes 29 cupcakes?!).

What Needs Work With The Sweet Server Cupcake Stand?

This is where it’s going to be hard to stay fair!

The Sweet Server stand is a good choice if you’re not expecting much. Since it’s made from styrofoam it breaks easily. It comes in the box as a bunch of small parts that have to be pushed together, and they fit together very tightly. The tight fit is normally a good thing, but it’s a bit flimsy and can break when putting it together. Luckily, it’s not hard to tape the pieces back together, but it’s still a pain in the butt!

I also don’t see how people are going to reuse this very well. Ours broke when we took it apart after we had finished, so it ended up getting tossed since we didn’t want to have to repair it. If you plan on getting multiple uses out of this cupcake stand, be very gentle when assembling and disassembling!

All in all, this isn’t the worst cupcake stand for your dollars. I prefer something that will last a lot longer, but for ten bucks you get what you pay for. This is the perfect cupcake stand for those that want something that’s as cheap as possible, and have no plans on reusing it.
